It’s never easy to improve something that doesn’t need improving. If higher output, wider bandwidth is one way to accomplish such a feat, this is how it’s done.
The Snell and panel speaker types captivated, before really low-powered refined amps came into focus. Dipole/bipole high frequency released around the room was all it took to convincingly illuminate a vast soundstage. Re-recreating a spacious soundstage is always one of the main reasons the pursuit of a single voice coil attached to your amps output wins the clarity game. Adding another driver to the main presentation always destroys some sonic aspects regardless of implementation, an issue lovingly ignored by every system with two or more drivers facing forward. One driver, in some significant and inexorable ways, has the edge on re-creating what the microphone heard. Thanks to a motor strength and magnet larger than most 12-inch medium-efficiency woofers it is rather easy and well, quick.
The rear-firing alnico horn tweeter adds the high end air and information that ultimately brings ease to the presentation. All without destroying the point source sound field that smaller single drivers excel at. It made sense at lower efficiencies, it‘s a monster of an an idea at higher efficiencies.
Adding a sub makes for a full 20-beyond 20khz system at 95db and no=load 8ohm impedance. A flea’s best friend is an enhanced high frequency presentation where low power sometimes suffers. Now it is effortless, and non-irritating. Listening to much costlier tweeters forward is fine. Listening to great lower-cost tweeters in reverse is every bit as satisfying and not at all irritating. While not as high in efficiency, the sound is remarkably similar overall to the larger systems employing hardware costing three to four times more facing forward.
Use of the tweeter allows a main driver with a lower natural resonance, extending the low end. The bass is firm, solid and open with low power.
